Blackboard is the online course management software provided by the University of Texas. Blackboard enables faculty and students to communicate and collaborate through real-time chats, threaded discussions, class e-mail, and online file exchanges.

Instructors can create and manage course Web sites without having to know HTML, and course material is easy to put up on the Web using Blackboard software. Since courses are password-protected through the use of UT EID, faculty can limit access to materials to only registered students in the course. In addition, Blackboard offers course management options such as a gradebook where students can see only their own grades, a digital dropbox for students to submit assignments electronically to the instructor, and course statistics so that faculty can evaluate and measure student progress.
