Setting the Office 2007 Save Default to Office 2003 File Types

If you have Office 2007, but want to make sure to save all your files as Office 2003 files so that your classmates and professors with Office 2003 can open them, follow these steps in each Office program. This example uses Word, but this works in Excel and PowerPoint as well.
- In Word 2007, click the Office button and choose Word Options.
- On the left, click Save. Then on the right, set Save files in this format to Word 97-2003 Document (*.doc).
- Click OK.
This will change the default save file type to the older Office type. You can still choose to save as an Office 2007 file in the Save As menu.
