If you are an officer for your student organization and need to create or edit your organization's McCombs website, email the Webmasters.

To publish changes to your website, you must use FrontPage. If you are on-campus but using wireless or off-campus, you will need to run VPN before opening FrontPage.

PLEASE NOTE: The instructions below assume you are working on your live site. Any changes you save will be immediately viewable on your website!

Contents

Your Organization's Website

All McCombs student organization websites can be found as an extension of the URL http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/students/

For example:
http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/students/absa
http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/students/gbc
http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/students/hba

Opening Your Site

Don't forget! If you are off-campus or using the campus wireless system, you must run VPN before opening your site in FrontPage!

The first time you open your site, you may have to open it by choosing Edit with Microsoft FrontPage in the Internet Explorer toolbar. You can also go to the File menu and choose Edit with Microsoft FrontPage.

To open your site the 2nd time and beyond, you will open FrontPage, go to the File menu, and choose Open Site. Type in your full URL (http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/students/_________). Be sure to include the http:// at the beginning.

HINT: A convenient shortcut is to choose File, then Recent Webs. If your site is listed there, just click on it to open.

You will need to log with your McCombs account as mccombs\msb____ with your McCombs password (the same account you use for McCombs email).

The Default Page

You can create as many pages as you would like. However, the main page of your website is indicated with a house icon. It must be named one of the following:

  • index.htm
  • default.htm
  • index.html
  • default.html
  • index.asp
  • default.asp

Single Spacing

The default spacing in FrontPage is pressing the Enter key to get double-spacing. However, if you want to single-space, press Shift + Enter.

Hyperlinks

You can create a hyperlink by going to the Insert menu and choosing Hyperlink. You can also click the toolbar icon with a globe. This opens the Insert Hyperlink box. You can choose to link to a page within your site or to an external URL. There are 4 options for linking to a URL:

  1. Use your web browser to select a page or file
  2. Make a hyperlink to a file on your computer
  3. Make a hyperlink that sends an email
  4. Create a new blank page and link to it

HINT: The keyboard shortcut for opening the Insert Hyperlink box is Ctrl + K.

Working with Images

Inserting Images

To insert images into your site, place the cursor where you want the picture to be inserted. Go to the Insert menu, then select Picture. In the expanded menu, select From File. When you save the page, you will be prompted to save these picture files to your site.

Changing the ALT Tag of an Image

Right click on the image, and choose Picture Properties. Click on the General tab. Under the Alternative Representations section, make sure the checkbox next to Text is checked, and then type in a description in the text box.

Resizing Pictures

To resize a picture, click on it once to make the little resize boxes appear in each corner. Drag a box to resize the picture. After the picture is resized, a context box appears in the bottom right of the image. Click on the context box, and in the menu that appears, choose Resample Picture To Match Size.

HINT: If you want to maintain the width-to-height proportion (which is generally recommended with photos), then drag a corner.

HINT: Generally, you only want to make photos smaller. Increasing a photo’s size by dragging a corner will often distort the pixels of the photo, and make it appear blocky.

Working Offline

It's a smart idea to work on an offline copy of your organization's website, so that if you mess up, you are not actually messing up the live site.

Make an Offline Copy

  1. Open your site as listed in the above directions
  2. Go to the File menu and select Publish Site.
  3. A Remote Website Properties window will appear. Select File System and Browse to a folder on your computer where you want to save a copy of the website. The whole folder will be turned into the website, so generally you want to use a new or empty folder.
  4. Click OK.
  5. If a question appears about creating a Web Site at that location, select Yes.
  6. The live site will be listed as Local Web site and the location on your computer will be listed as Remote. Click Publish Web site.
  7. If there are any pages that will not work locally, you may receive messages regarding this. Click Ignore or Continue.
  8. When it is done copying, close the live site (File - Close Site) and open the new local copy.

Preview the Site in a Browser

You will want to make sure that your web pages look correct and that all your links work before publishing back to the live site. You can easily see what the current page will look like in a web browser. Go to the File menu, and then choose Preview in Browser. Select the size window you want to view. Generally, 800 x 600 is a good view.

HINT: The keyboard shortcut for viewing in an 800 x 600 window is F12.

Publish the Offline Copy to the Live Site

When you are ready to publish your changes:

  1. Open the local copy.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Publish Site.
  3. A Remote Website Properties window will appear. Select FrontPage or SharePoint Services and type the full address of your organization's website into the location field. Make sure to include http:// in the address.
  4. Click OK.
  5. You may be asked to log into your site. Log with your McCombs account as mccombs\msb____ with your McCombs password (the same account you use for McCombs email).
  6. Click Publish Web site. By default, only changed pages are published.
